APRIL NEWSLETTER
TITLE I TIDBITS:
LOOKING BACK: Wow! Where did March go? Your second grader has had another very busy month in Math. Most classrooms spent time working on place value to 1,000 and addition and subtraction of 3 digit numbers with and without regrouping. A few classrooms also started their geometry unit, learning about flat surfaces, vertices and edges, plane and solid figures, and polygons and angles. As always second graders are still working hard to memorize their basic addition and subtraction facts as they gear up for multiplication and division in third grade. In the Title Math room, we have been busy reinforcing all the above concepts with a special emphasis on three digit addition and subtraction with regrouping. That's a lot of math!
LOOKING AHEAD: April's math will include geometry for the classes that didn't quite get there in March. Second graders will also work on counting money, adding and subtracting money, and measuring in centimeters, meters, inches, feet and yards. Students have also begun taking their NWEA math assessments. It is always exciting to see how much progress they have made since Spring of 2013. As always we will continue to hit the basic facts hard in the Title Math room and reinforce what is being covered in the classroom. If your child appears to be struggling with his/her classwork, be sure to check out the IXL and XtraMath websites. They are awesome for reinforcing all the skills your child needs in second grade. Let me know if you have misplaced your child's password.
I would like to end with one of my favorite quotes from Walt Disney. This is especially true for students who think they have no math ability.
If you can dream it, you can do it.
