TITLE I TIDBITS
First graders are busy exploring two digit numbers. Currently we are learning how to add and subtract ten, using one and two digit numbers with and without a hundreds chart. This is a difficult concept for many first graders in the beginning. A great mental math activity would be to give your child a two digit number and have him/her practice adding and subtracting ten.
We are working with base ten blocks (tens and ones) to represent one and two digit numbers. Students can then compare to determine which numbers are greater/less. We are also putting three non-sequential two digit numbers in order from least to greatest and greatest to least. Once students are comfortable identifying and representing one and two digit numbers, we will move into two digit addition and subtraction (without regrouping). A few first grade classes will begin their unit on time (telling time to the half hour) and some will work on their graph unit, using data from graphs and creating graphs of their own, Speaking of graphs, remember to have your child vote for his/her favorite spring activity on the Monthly Poll. We will study the data and graph the results.
As always, continue memorizing those basic addition and subtraction facts! We are seeing great progress from the kids who return their Flash-4-Cash slips! Great job!
It looks like we may finally get a break in the weather this month - enjoy! Thanks again for everything you do at home to make your child experience success in Math!
