Title I Tidbits
Your second grader has been busy working on memorization of basic addition and subtraction facts. Once again I can’t stress the importance of fact memorization enough. You will repeatedly hear me say that this is greatest predictor of future success in math. Please call, stop in or email if you need ideas about how to help your child at home. Once a child has memorized his/her basic facts, it really frees of a lot of energy to focus on other, more advanced math concepts.
Some second grade classes have been working on time and money. The expectation for second graders is to tell and write time to the nearest 5 minutes, and understand terms such as half past, quarter to, minutes after . . . Second graders are also expected to identify and give the value of dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies, use dollar and cent symbols appropriately and solve word problems with money. Whew! That is a tall order!
I hope we will have an opportunity to visit at conferences. Please stop by our room, #118. We will have estimation jars for both parents and students. I will also be giving out addition/subtraction flashcards as well as information on Dojo; a point system that we have been trying out this year. I look forward to seeing you soon!
