APRIL NEWSLETTER
TITLE I TIDBITS:
LOOKING BACK: Wow! Where did March go? Your first grader has had another very busy month in Math. Most classrooms spent time working on comparing and ordering numbers to 100, skip counting (by 5's and 10's), and adding and subtracting multiples of ten (ex: 20 + 30, 50 - 20). Some classes are even being introduced to two digit addition with regrouping, and a few have started their units on time to the half-hour and graphing. As always first graders are still working hard to memorize their basic addition and subtraction facts. In the Title Math room, we have been busy reinforcing all the above concepts with a special emphasis on two digit addition and subtraction. That's a lot of math!
LOOKING AHEAD: April's math will include time to the half-hour and graphing for the classes that didn't quite get there in March. A few classes will begin their fractions unit; learning about equal parts, halves and fourths, and a few will introduce students to money; learning the names and values of coins. Students have also begun taking their NWEA math assessments. It is always exciting to see how much progress they have made since Spring of 2013. As always we will continue to hit the basic facts hard in the Title Math room and reinforce what is being covered in the classroom. If your child appears to be struggling with his/her classwork, be sure to check out the IXL and XtraMath websites. They are awesome for reinforcing all the skills your child needs in first grade. Let me know if you have misplaced your child's password.
I would like to end with one of my favorite quotes from Walt Disney. This is especially true for students who think they have no math ability.
If you can dream it, you can do it.
