TITLE I TIDBITS
Your child has been working hard on two digit addition and subtraction with regrouping. This is a difficult concept in the beginning so any additional practice at home will be very beneficial. Again, memorization of basic addition and subtraction facts will make regrouping so much easier as the students can put all their energy into the "process" without having to work so hard on the computation. In Title Math students are using the iPads to "be the teacher" and demonstrate the steps for either addition or subtraction with regrouping on an app called Educreations. Later we can play the lessons back to see how well students covered all the steps! We can even send your child's lesson to your email. Let me know if you'd like to see it!
Second graders are beginning to explore larger numbers (into the thousands). We are comparing four digit numbers, determining which is greater/less, putting them in order, and reading, writing, and representing the numbers with base ten blocks. A solid understanding of place value is a huge component of developing number sense so we will spend a great deal of time on this in Title Math. Several second grade classes are beginning to add and subtract three digit numbers and a few classes will begin their geometry and money units before the end of March. I am noticing that many second graders are struggling to count money. It's great practice to let your second grader count your change for you!
As always, continue memorizing those basic addition and subtraction facts! We are seeing great progress from the kids who return their Flash-4-Cash slips! Great job!
It looks like we may finally get a break in the weather this month - enjoy!
