TITLE 1 TIDBITS:
LOOKING BACK: It's crazy, but the 2013-14 school year is quickly coming to an end! Your first grader (soon to be second grader) started the year working hard to recognize, say, and write his/her numbers. He/she is now able to add and subtract two digit numbers! Most students are even able to regroup! Your child can also add three single digit numbers. We've come a long way!
In April many first grade classes learned to tell time to the half hour. While this may seem simple enough, remember that many homes are no longer furnished with standard clocks. So even though your child may be quite adept at telling time on a digital clock, standard clocks can be quite a challenge! Your child should be able to tell you which hand is the minute hand and which is the hour hand. He/she should also be able to count by 5s as this is a necessary prerequisite skill for both telling time and counting money.
Many first grade classes are wrapping up their units on graphing. Students have been working on using tally marks to collect data as well as reading and creating picture graphs and bar graphs. In Title Math we also graphed the results of our Monthly Poll question. Do you know which rainy day activity was the winner?
LOOKING AHEAD: First grade classrooms will end their year with a review of all the first grade Common Core math skills. Some classes will also spend time reviewing story problems and a few will introduce students to Money; recognizing and counting coins to a dollar; a skill that will be taught more in second grade.
I would like to thank all of my Title I families for the opportunity to work with your children. It has been so rewarding to see how far they've advanced their math skills. I hope you are noticing progress as well.
SUMMER TIPS: My best advice for avoiding summer regression in Math would be to keep practicing basic addition and subtraction facts. Flashcards, websites, math games, worksheets, etc., can really help your child to keep his/her skills sharp. Look for a Title I Math Summer Practice Packet to come home from me in the near future. Any part of the packet that is completed and returned to me in the fall will earn your child a small reward. HAVE A WONDERFUL SUMMER!
