TITLE I TIDBITS:
I hope that everyone had an enjoyable Thanksgiving. Most second grade classrooms have finished their units on time and money. Please continue to revisit these real-life applications periodically at home, however. As with anything, "If you don't use it, you lose it!" Many classes are now working on place value; working with hundreds, tens, and ones. This is such an important skill for students to understand for the more complicated math that follows, like regrouping, A few classes have already began to introduce the concept of regrouping with 2 digit numbers. (Regrouping may have been referred to as "borrowing" when you were in school). See if your child can tell you how many hundreds, tens or ones are in a given number. We are also practicing reading bigger numbers in our Title I classroom. You may be surprised to know that your child is beginning to read numbers in the thousands!
A few classrooms have also worked on arrays where there are an equal number of objects in rows, and an equal number of objects in columns. Students learn how to use repeated addition to figure out the number of objects without counting each one. As you may have guessed, this is a very important precursor to multiplication.
Finally second graders are continuing their work on basic fact memorization. I can't stress enough the importance of flashcard practice. Not only does this help your child memorize his/her facts, but it earns him/her Dojos and extra spending money in our Title I classroom. When your child has memorized his/her facts, it makes ALL math so much easier. This frees up his/her energy for new math concepts being taught. It's like knowing how to drive. You know longer have to "think" about where the brakes are, how far to turn the steering wheel, etc. This frees up a lot of energy to think about other things, like how to drive safely. If you would like some tips on memorizing facts, you can refer to the December Newsletter for first grade, or stop in, call, or email anytime!
Have a wonderful holiday season and remember to practice those facts over break!
