WELCOME . . .
to Title I Math! I am so excited to have this opportunity to work with you and your child! WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO September has been a busy month! We have been getting to know one another and establishing routines. We have tried to spend a little time on the computers each day so the kids get comfortable logging on, memorizing their passwords, and navigating to some of the educational websites that we will be using throughout the year. Be sure to click on the "Websites" tab on our class website (klocketitlemath.weebly.com) to check out a few. Parents often ask what we do in Title Math. During each Title Math session we attempt to work on the following: 1. Basic Addition and Subtraction Facts; the building blocks for all kinds of math - according to research this is the greatest determinant of future success in Math. A Fla$h-4-Ca$h packet containing all the addition and subtraction facts your child needs to know was recently sent home. Practice them and keep them in a safe place all year! practicing their flashcards. There is also a sheet in their packet where you can track their PAWS progress. New Fla$h-4-Ca$h slips will come home every two weeks and I will record the facts they are working on, If you would like some pointers on incremental rehearsal (a flash card strategy), please stop in. It's a simple technique that can make flashcards practice much more effective and enjoyable. You can also refer to the handout that came home with your child’s flashcards.
2. North Dakota Common Core: these are the skills needed to be successful on class assignments and standardized assessments. 3. Classroom Reinforcement: We attempt to spend a little time each day reinforcing content that is being covered in the classroom. Our small group setting and the extra exposure to content really benefits most children. WHAT YOUR CHILD HAS BEEN LEARNING IN MATH: Most second grade classrooms have been working on review of basic addition and subtraction facts and strategies. Ensuring that your child memorizes his/her doubles, doubles +1, facts that equal ten, and knows strategies to add and subtract 0, 1, 2, and 3 (counting up or back from the larger number) are extremely important as they prepare to move on to more complex skills. WHAT’S NEXT Many classrooms will continue working on basic facts. Most are learning how to think addition to do subtraction as well as the relationships between addition and subtraction. A few classes will also be introducing time (to the nearest 5 minutes) and money over the next few weeks. This would be a great time to pull out that pocket change and practice counting coins with your child! Again I look forward to working with you and your child. Please feel free, to call, email or stop by anytime! - Mrs. Klocke |
